Variety Of Sound announces mkII versions for NastyDLA and TesslaPRO to be released during Q2/2012. By this, all the sonic bliss of stateful saturation algorithms will be made available for both, the highly regarded classic chorus echo device with tape-delay simulation and the critically acclaimed “transient aware” signal saturator.
Stateful Saturation takes advantage of some sought after analog qualities and preserves them accurately during their transfer into the digital domain:
- high frequency shimmer and sheen without digital harshness
- depth and ’3d’ imaging side effects before distortion itself becomes apparent
- audio transient dynamics that remains vibrant and alive
- natural and impressive bass response
NastyDLA mkII remains feature wise the very same but introduces the input stage modelled by this new and exciting technology and also redesigns the tape compression algorithm for an improved IM distortion performance. TesslaPRO mkII will go way further by introducing a variety of different signal coloration options, ranging from console style distortion models up to typical mic/preamp colors.

I must admit that TesslaPRO never did anything to my tracks. Will try again with the mkII version.
Well, it’s subtle but it definitely audible. Takes time to get around.

I tried time and again to perceive SOMETHING but to no avail. I came to the conclusion that my system (DAW and ears) is not “up tp the task” (and apparently I’m not the only one).
Tessla SE, OTOH, is something completely different. I had hopes that it would get an upgrade, too…
The mkII version definitely has a more prominent effect but opposed to lots of commercial ones it never goes “over the top”.

Your plugins are NEVER “over the top”. then again, one has to hear SOMETHING (not to mention that the listeners have to hear something…).
If it’ll continue the lines of thrillseeker, I guess we’re in a good direction. but we’ll have to wait for the end result… 🙂

This is going to sound really obvious, but have you tried it on your 2 bus (put it before everything else) when you’re just making your last tweaks? Your mix should instantly sound more analog, full, and loud. It’s a bit like cheating.

I wouldn’t mind “slightly over the top” as a possible option. I mean… why not? They can be useful in some situations.
I don’t know how you can produce plugs of this quality for free, but I am not complaining.
It is high time I sent in a serious donation, I think..
Somehow TesslaSE has always “sounded” better to my ears than Pro ..

I never use Tessla, but if you put the stateful saturation smackdown on it, I will definitely give it another shot. The saturation on TrhillseekerLA is mind-bogglingly good.
I have one request if at all possible and that would be to be able to turn off the hiss on Nasty DLA, or provide a noise gate option. One of my favorite tricks with that thing is slamming the return with compression, but it kills my s/n on my mix forcing me to stick a noise gate after NastyDLA. I do it so often it’s almost automatic. But it would be nice if I didn’t have to…. I know I can always ASK right?!?? LOL.
BTW – please put the stateful saturation magic pixie dust on Ferric. I freakin’ love that plug. Been using it on the 2buss of probably a fifth of all my mixes. It’s like magic.
In the mkII version, you can switch the noise off by turning the noise level left most – is that ok?

This is great news; ThrillseekerLA has become my favourite compressor, replacing big-name (read “expensive”) compressors very quickly. I would also be quite keen to hear how you would integrate the new stateful saturation model into a tape sim (maybe with optional tape “deficiencies” such as wow and flutter?). Thanks again for sharing your talent!
