FerricTDS 1.5

After 3 month of bugfixing, improving and testing, version 1.5 of the award-winning tape dynamics simulator is finally available as of today. It features numerous fixes and additions and if you did not tried it yet don’t miss it now!

Release notes, v1.5.0:

  • operates with zero latency processing now
  • latency is correctly reported to host now
  • 100% flat frequency and phase response, allows external dry/wet mixing
  • tape mode switch added with classic and modern sound option
  • reworked limiter offers true and accurate brickwall limiting now (in 100% position)
  • visual limiting indicator added
  • ~50% cpu savings (depending on actual board+cpu type)
  • vast stability improvements in Cubase hosts
  • audio crackles while loading and on/off operation removed
  • input level adjustment option added
  • TRIM knob range extended to -6/+6 dB
  • internal gain staging is slightly adjusted
  • new plug-in ID used
  • small graphic alignments and retouch
  • version number added in credits pop up screen
  • parameter list sorted (as appearing in host)
  • presets adjusted
  • extended manual

This version is not a backwards compatible and therefore provides a different plug-in ID.

The FerricTDS 1.5 audio plug-in is a Win32 only release and requires a SSE2 (or higher) compatible system. It is tested and known to work in many VST compatible hosts. The download is available through the Downloads page here.

  1. Thanks! πŸ˜€

  2. kingocounty says:

Awesome! Just downloaded and can’t wait to try it! This’ll distract me from waiting for the new channel strip πŸ˜‰

  3. aj washington says:

Got it…Thnk you so much…This is a very good sounding plugin and essential on the master buss πŸ™‚

  4. Thanks, Bootsy!

  5. Thank you, Bootsie for update!

  6. Great!
Sadly there is a big, big bug! After inserting an instance of FerricTDS in Cubase 5.1.1. (Core2Duo, XP SP3) the GUIs of all your plugins (just checked FerricTDS, BootEQ mkII, Density mkII and TesslaPro) won’t show up anymore!

    Please excuse my bad english.

    Cheers
    Dennis

  7. higher quality screenshot & thumb, highly optimized PNG, for linking etc πŸ™‚

Well done guys. This is almost on every master I do now. It’s that universally good.

  8. aj washington says:

Great…Sadly there is a big bug…After installing Ferric v1.5 in Sonar Pro 8.5,my computer blew up πŸ™‚

  9. Do you plan to implement these “vast stability improvements” to all the rest of your plugins?
    Especially Density 2? Cheers πŸ™‚

  10. Shogger says:

    Thanx a lot, Bootsie!

This is my most important and most used plugin!

  11. Great!!!! Thanks!!!

  12. Eytan Mich says:

    That’s great news !

I understand that the SM bug (causing Cubase 5.1.1 to
crash upon loading X instances of the plug) is not
    fixed… oh well

Nonetheless, great to have that !

  13. Jazzy Pidjay says:

Excellent !! and the manual is delicious too !

    Congratulations!

  14. Steplton says:

v.1.5: plug-in has ceased to work in Linux/WINE/Reaper. Even the interface is not displayed (version 1.0.2 works well)

    • I can’t support that configuration …

    • prschmitt says:

You might need to place a copy of windows’ gdiplus.dll in your /sytem32 folder.
That solved the ‘missing gui’ problems that I used to have with numerous vsts.
Ferric also works pretty well in ardourvst for those who care πŸ™‚

  15. Yes!! One of the best plugin ever, now even better.
    Keep it up man!

  16. cool:spring! says:

works for me (live 8.1) cool presets! herbert, i used ferric accidentally inserting it in a m/s matrixed chain, and in some cases (by leveling the side gain) i had wonderful results…. i would like to hear your opinion on it (and maybe relase a future updated relase with a m/s switch, like the density)

    • M/S is cool, indeed πŸ˜‰

      • cool:spring! says:

you DID try, huh? !!!!! (impressive….) people usually don’t like to use waveshaping on m/s, but… try to use a tube preamp (true is better, but plugin isn’t bad too)as an insert and push the side channel….(besides looking at the phase schope that’s really funny) it gives sucha hot colour to everything!! with ferric there’s not even any problem with eq compensation or dc shift due to strong 2nd harmonics…you could really put a switch, that turns the input screw into a m/s balance mix gain, and the whole processing to a m/s mode (with the limiter still in l/r)!!

  17. Seems like a success :

    “Oops! (509)
This account’s public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled! “

  18. cfbarrerap says:

I cant download too, pleaseeeee i wanna test it!!!

  19. cant wait to try out this update – is there any other download link available? πŸ™‚

  20. Orchidius says:

Well, one could circumvent the situation with a torrent for example. If this is ok with bootsie of course…

    • I could provide a (temporary) public ftp mirror (with limited bandwith but ok for a plugin download) if necessary but I didn’t had the chance to get the plugin 😦

  21. Herbert, you might consider this πŸ™‚
    http://www.bittorrent.com/dna
It can be branded etc… and it should easily survive content going offline if people help seed for a bit. Considering the popularity of your content, that shouldn’t be a problem.

  22. I’ve added a rapidshare mirror on my downloads page.

  23. yes m/s is very interesting to explore…
have you tried the new ddmf’s metaplugin ?
ive read good things about it .

    herbert ..an off topic’s question… :

do you think that, one day, you implement an input level to tesla pro ? or no ?

i think that it is the only thing it lacks on this plug which is awesome !

    tschuss !

  24. Hmm, I’ve got one problem with Ferric:

Internal volume compensation doesn’t work in latest (or beta3) version, only in beta2. When I adjust input volume higher, volume goes loud and I have to pull trim all the way down. Sometimes even that isn’t enough. But all is well in beta2. What’s going on? I use Reaper.

  25. ferric sounds great and nice to CPU, but 51MB RAM per instance.

  26. FINALLY an input gain knob!

Thank you SO MUCH for taking that option into consideration. Now I can properly “drive” the signal into FerricTDS.

  27. Eytan Mich says:

Was Ferric 1.5.0 compiled with latest the SM ? (1.1.7)

    Thanks

    • yeap.

      • Eytan Mich says:

Any word as to what is the source of multiple instance crash thing ? it seem it is not related to this version…

Is it only my problem ? I recall some other guys were
        having the same problem…

Maybe Ferric was meant to be inserted only on the 2bus
but I’m afraid to start instanciating it across my
        projects, should I wish…

  28. What about making a “reversed tape effect” / “de-tape” function? With FerricTDS, the search for making new music sound old has come to an end. Now begins the search for making old music sound new.

Some dude over at Gearslutz, discussing the Anamod ATS-1 Tape Simulator (http://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/103897-anamod-ats-1-tape-simulator-50.html#post5289564) said:

to do this you would need to

    (1) take the analog model of the tape machine,
    (2) convert its state space model into the frequency domain,
    (3) use the resulting transfer function and calculate its inverse.
    (4) build an analog circuit whose input output relationship matches this inverse function

the guys who build the anamod could easily do this if they saw any value in it.

Curious what Bootsie thinks of this?

    Much obliged,
    Tony

    • That’s actually a really cool idea. Even if one wants to make music sound “old” it could be a really great learning experience to sort of reverse engineer ones favoutite tracks to see how they are mixed without the saturation/artifacts/frequency-alterations of tape etc. This could be really helpful for the mixing (and mastering) process for those of us working digitally and totally in the box.

  29. come on pylorca whats so special about that 😦

    reminds me of http://www.gearslutz.com/board/rap-hip-hop-engineering-production/482285-making-beats-lab.html

  30. Well, to paraphrase the Gearslutz thread:

I never understood why “showing off my drumbeat” videos are so interesting to watch. They always look so silly to me.

    And:

I love watching drummers and classical guitar players play. I can watch that all day. But watching someone twist knobs on a controller controller while at the same time thinking they are “hot shit” because they are doing so, just kills me.

  31. Sorry:

But watching someone twist knobs on a plugin while at the same time thinking they are β€œhot shit” because they are doing so, just kills me.

  32. “eat shit” (use your mouth)

  33. calm down folks, pleez!

  34. Sorry πŸ™‚

  35. Hello.
All preset default settings do not work well in Adobe Audition 3 (3.0.1).
The version 1.5 beta 3 worked very fine.
For example, the manual says: All presets Were Design on audio material around with Levels peaking at 0 dBFS.
Levels of the buttons are different.
    Thanks.

  36. Ace work, loving this in my Wavelab 6 effects chain

  37. EnanoGarrison says:

Impressive efficient plugin. Almost impossible to overload CPU in Reaper (I put more than 20 instances and is still rock solid on an AMD Turion X2 2,1)

  38. Thank you so much!
I love your plugins and its so great that you share your work…
Cant wait to try this one.

    Jon

  39. Cool plug however none of the presets do anything (in SAWStudio), they show in the menu but clicking on them doesn’t appear to change anything in the app. Also changes don’t save with the EDL. I do appreciate your work Bootsie, your plugs sound great.

  40. Hwy where do I get the manual for this? Been playing around with it but would like to know more in depth what I’m doing lol….sorry, kinda a noob to tape saturation πŸ˜›

  41. BGelais says:

Wonderfull plugin! I use it for mastering and it do the job lake no other plugin! love it!
